Zimbabwe Stars Shine Abroad: Arubi’s Heroics, Hadebe’s Praise, Msendami’s Missed Call-Up

Warriors trio continue to make headlines in South Africa and the United States

It was a weekend to remember for Zimbabwean footballers abroad — with Washington Arubi, Teenage Hadebe, and Daniel Msendami all making the news for very different reasons.

Arubi the Penalty King as Gallants Stun Sundowns

History repeated itself in the Carling Knockout Cup, but this time it was Washington Arubi who etched his name into the headlines. The veteran Warriors goalkeeper produced a goalkeeping masterclass to help Marumo Gallants eliminate giants Mamelodi Sundowns on penalties and storm into the quarterfinals.

Arubi was unstoppable — saving three spot-kicks and then confidently scoring one himself, capping a sensational night. His heroics mirrored last season’s shock exit for Sundowns, when fellow Zimbabwean Elvis Chipezeze masterminded a similar upset.

Adding to the Zimbabwean flavour, Daniel Msendami also converted his penalty for Gallants, continuing his fine run of form in South Africa. The victory once again underlined Zimbabwe’s growing impact in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Hadebe Impresses in MLS as Cincinnati Beat Toronto

Across the Atlantic, Teenage Hadebe earned praise from FC Cincinnati head coach Pat Noonan following a disciplined display in a 2–0 home win over Toronto FC.

The former Houston Dynamo and Warriors defender started the match and was withdrawn after 60 minutes, as Noonan opted to rest key players ahead of a crucial Concacaf Champions Cup tie in Mexico.

“I told Teenage when he came off, ‘We handled it perfectly. You did really, really well,’” said Noonan. “I think today it was the perfect tactical performance.”

Hadebe’s calm defending and leadership continue to make him a key figure for both club and country as AFCON 2025 approaches.

Msendami Misses Final Warriors Call-Up — For Now

Despite his fine form with Gallants, Msendami will not feature in the Warriors’ squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana.

The South African club initially announced his national call-up on social media, celebrating their “electric winger” before later issuing a clarification that Msendami was only on the provisional list and not part of the final squad named by coach Michael Nees.

While disappointing for fans eager to see him in national colours, the 24-year-old’s recent displays — full of pace, creativity, and composure — ensure his future with the Warriors remains bright.
