Divine Lunga has delivered a clear message ahead of Monday night’s decisive clash against South Africa — when the whistle blows, club ties mean nothing and country comes first.
The Zimbabwe left-back, who plays his club football alongside several South African internationals at Mamelodi Sundowns, insists there will be no room for sentiment when the Warriors step onto the pitch to face Bafana Bafana.
“Yes, we are friends, teammates and brothers,” said Lunga. “But once we are on the field, that changes. There is no brother there — that’s football. You have to bring your A game.”
Fighting for the badge
Lunga stressed that representing Zimbabwe outweighs all personal relationships, especially in a match carrying such high stakes.
“After the game, the friendship can continue. We are not fighting — we are competing. But for 90 minutes, it’s 100 percent about the badge and the country.”
The Warriors defender made it clear that he is ready to give everything for Zimbabwe.
“I will put my A game and fight for the badge.”
A decisive Monday night
Zimbabwe and South Africa meet on Monday at 18:00, with pride, momentum and qualification on the line. The Warriors know only a fearless, committed performance will keep their AFCON dream alive — and Lunga’s words reflect the hard-edged mentality inside camp: respect the opponent, but fight relentlessly for Zimbabwe.
For South Africa, at least a draw would be enough to secure a Round of 16 spot if Egypt avoid defeat against Angola. However, should Bafana Bafana lose, they would be forced to rely on finishing among the tournament’s four best third-placed teams.
For the Warriors, the mission is simple: no friendships, no compromises — just total commitment to the nation.
