ZIFA Sack Nees: Zim Warriors to Play Algeria, Qatar Friendlies With New Coach

Michael Nees has been dismissed as head coach of the Zimbabwe Warriors following a disappointing run of results that overshadowed his qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The German tactician, appointed in July 2024 on a two-year contract, managed only two wins in sixteen matches and struggled to establish consistency or a clear identity in his side’s play.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) confirmed the termination of Nees’ contract with immediate effect:

“The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) wishes to inform all stakeholders and members of the public that the Executive Committee has resolved to terminate the contract of Mr. Michael Nees with immediate effect.

“ZIFA takes this opportunity to sincerely thank Mr. Nees for his efforts and contributions to Zimbabwean football during his tenure. His dedication to the game and service to national structures are greatly appreciated.”

ZIFA said further details regarding the technical transition and interim coaching setup will be announced soon.

Magwizi Explains the Decision

Speaking at a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi said the decision came after wide consultations.

“We have various stakeholders — the fans, government, and clubs — and as the Executive Committee, we had set certain expectations that were not being met,” said Magwizi.

“There was a need for a review, and after submissions from the technical committee and broad consultations, the decision was made. We are now looking forward to engaging someone new who can bring renewed energy to the team.”

Warriors to Face Algeria and Qatar with New Coach

Magwizi also confirmed that the Warriors will face Algeria and Qatar in the next FIFA international window as part of preparations for the upcoming AFCON finals.

“We wanted fixtures that truly test our mettle,” he said. “Algeria and Qatar represent the calibre of opposition we must face to measure our readiness for AFCON, and the choice of these friendlies was deliberate.”

The friendlies will serve as an early audition for whoever takes charge of the Warriors bench next.
