Washington Arubi Leads Warriors Into Must-Win Clash Against Benin, Latest Table

The Warriors face Benin today at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan in a must-win 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. Zimbabwe sit bottom of Group C with four points from six matches and must beat Benin to keep their campaign alive.

Veteran goalkeeper Washington Arubi, recalled to solve Zimbabwe’s goalkeeping crisis, has become a stabilising figure. Coach Michael Nees praised his impact, admitting his experience has brought “stability and belief” despite his age. Arubi himself insists the squad is “ready to fight tooth and nail.”

Zimbabwe’s preparations in Abidjan have been positive, with European-based stars joining camp, but vice-captain Marshall Munetsi is suspended. Benin, meanwhile, are chasing their first-ever win over Zimbabwe. Winless in their last eight matches, they sit third in the group with eight points, with coach Gernot Rohr banking on the quality of Jodel Dossou.

The two sides last met in March, drawing 2-2 in South Africa. With Zimbabwe unbeaten in their last two friendlies and Benin struggling for form, Today’s clash is finely poised.

Group C Standings

  • South Africa – 13 points

  • Benin – 8 points

  • Rwanda – 7 points

  • Nigeria – 6 points

  • Lesotho – 5 points

  • Zimbabwe – 4 points
