Warriors Coach Nees Targets Historic Knockout Stage at 2025 AFCON

Zimbabwe Warriors Coach Confident Ahead of 2025 AFCON Group with Egypt, Angola, South Africa

Michael Nees Sets Clear AFCON Ambition: “We’re Not Going to Morocco as Tourists”

Warriors head coach Michael Nees has made it clear that Zimbabwe’s mission at the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco is to make history by progressing beyond the group stage for the first time.

Speaking in Durban following Zimbabwe’s spirited 0–0 draw with South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Nees said the team’s focus has already shifted toward December’s continental showpiece.

“I want to repeat this — we’re not going to Morocco as tourists,” said Nees. “We want to be there on New Year’s Eve, because that’s when the knockout rounds begin. That’s our ambition and our target. The journey has its ups and downs, but in the long run, there’s real hope.”

Zimbabwe were drawn in a challenging Group B, alongside Egypt, South Africa, and Angola — three familiar foes. The Warriors will open their campaign against Egypt on 22 December at the Grand Stade d’Agadir, followed by a Boxing Day clash with Angola at the Grand Stade de Marrakech, before closing the group with a highly anticipated derby against South Africa on 29 December at the same venue.

After their resilient display in Durban, Nees believes the Warriors are building the mental strength and tactical discipline needed to compete at Africa’s biggest stage.

“This team is growing in belief and structure. We want to make Zimbabweans proud — not just by competing, but by advancing,” he added.

The countdown to Morocco has begun — and the Warriors’ message is clear: they’re not just participating; they’re aiming to make history.
