WARRIORS COACH HUNT: Alois Bunjira roots for former Ghana coach Schàfer

As the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) recently announced that they are hunting for a new national team, Warriors coach, former star player Alois Bunjira has thrown former Ghana coach Winfred Schafer’s name into the ring.

ZIFA put the bar higher, demanding qualifications beyond the reach of local coaches.

Judging from the qualifications demanded by ZIFA in the job advert, it is clear that the next Warriors coach will come outside the country.

Meanwhile, Bunjira has suggested that maybe it is high time for the nation to hire the German coach, Winfred “Winnie” Schäfer.

“Winfred Schaeffer…

“I hear, besides coaching, he also has infrastructure development plans for Zimbabwe, including a stadium somewhere in Mashonaland.

“Maybe we could bring him on board,” he said.

Apparently, responding to Bunjira, former Warriors utility player Cephas Chimedza raised reservations on reports of building a stadium.

“If it sounds too good to be true that’s a major red flag.

“How can a coach be thinking about building a stadium,” said Chimedza.

Winfred “Winnie” Schäfer (born 10 January 1950) is a German football manager and former player who is the technical director for the Ghana national football team.

In November 2001, Schäfer was appointed head coach of Cameroon.

He won the 2002 African Cup of Nations with Cameroon, defeating Senegal 3–2 in a penalty shoot-out after a 0–0 draw in the finals.

In 2006, he won the UAE national championship with Al-Ahli (Dubai). He worked then from 2007 to 2009 for UAE League side Al-Ain.

In late January 2021, Schäfer became the head coach of Qatar Stars League club Al-Khor to help them in a difficult situation.

Results and performance improved relatively, the team remained in the league after win 3–1 in the play-off match against Al-Shahania. On 11 November 2021, he left Qatar after his contract was terminated.

He was later named Ghana coach before holding the current technical director post.
