Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 19-year-old wing-back/winger Ethan Sutherland has linked up with the club’s first-team squad for their pre-season tour of Portugal, hoping to impress and stake an early claim for a potential breakthrough next season.

Sutherland earned his spot in the travelling party as a late replacement for Wes Okoduwa, who returned to England earlier this week after sustaining an injury. His inclusion sees him join fellow Zimbabwean internationals Marshall Munetsi and Tawanda Chirewa on the tour.

Born in Scotland to a Zimbabwean mother and Scottish father, Sutherland qualifies to represent either nation at senior level. He previously turned out for Scotland’s U19s, making his debut in October 2024 in a 2–1 victory over Hungary and earning three youth caps. Known for his pace and versatility, he can operate both as a winger and at right back.

The promising youngster began his football journey with St. Mirren in Scotland before moving to Wolves. While yet to feature for their senior side, he spent last season on loan at National League outfit Solihull Moors, gaining valuable first-team experience.

ZIFA’s Talent Hunt Pays Off?

Sutherland’s presence in Portugal comes as the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) finalises FIFA paperwork for his switch of allegiance from Scotland to Zimbabwe. This follows a meeting between ZIFA officials, the player, and his family in London earlier this year, where the decision was confirmed.

“Ethan’s decision was driven by passion and identity,” a ZIFA official told SportsBoom.com in April. “He chose Zimbabwe not for playing time but because of his love and connection to the country.”

The move is part of a wider push by Warriors head coach Michael Nees to recruit UK-born players of Zimbabwean heritage who can strengthen the national team’s long-term prospects. If approved, Sutherland will join a growing list of UK-based Zimbabwe internationals, including Jordan Zemura, Andy Rinomhota, Tawanda Chirewa, and Marley Tavaziva.
