Fusire offered to fund the upgrade himself, but talks with ZIFA officials collapsed
Talented Zim midfielder stresses loyalty to national team — insists decision was purely logistical, not financial
Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Sean Fusire has publicly apologised to Warriors coach Michael Nees, his teammates, and Zimbabwean fans after withdrawing from the national team camp ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Benin.
In a heartfelt statement released on Sunday, the 20-year-old made it clear that his absence had nothing to do with financial disagreements or friction with the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA). Instead, Fusire emphasised that his decision was shaped by concerns over the gruelling 40-hour travel schedule and its impact on his fitness, given his past injury record.
“This is disappointing for me personally as a player. I acknowledge my part in the confusion that has taken place, this is not how I desired for things to unravel,” Fusire said.
He explained that he had requested a flight upgrade — not for luxury, but to make sure he could arrive in the best condition to give his all for Zimbabwe in Abidjan and Johannesburg, and still return ready for duty with Sheffield Wednesday. Fusire even offered to cover the upgrade using his allowances from the last camp, but said communication with officials broke down.
Despite the setback, the midfielder, who made his Warriors debut in June, was firm about where his heart lies: with Zimbabwe.
“I have no issue with ZIFA and definitely my love for the country of Zimbabwe is forever in my heart. The decision not to travel wasn’t for financial implications or gain; it was more of a logistical problem to ensure I would be fit,” he clarified.
Reiterating his commitment to the national team cause, Fusire declared:
“I remain ready and honoured to be given another chance to play for Zimbabwe in the future. I wish the boys every good luck and success in Ivory Coast and also in South Africa.”
