Coach filmed slapping his own player; league says safeguarding is paramount
Zimbabwe Warriors deputy coach and Ngezi Platinum Stars boss Takesure Chiragwi faces mounting scrutiny after he was caught on camera slapping Macdonald Makuwe during Saturday’s clash with Dynamos at Ngoni Stadium. The incident came in the 34th minute, shortly after Dynamos levelled via a Brooklyn Katumba own goal. Chiragwi—already red-carded amid protests—appeared to lash out as staff tried to restrain him.
ZIFA has not dismissed Chiragwi from the national setup at this stage.
PSL response
In a Saturday evening statement, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) said the safety, security and safeguarding of players, officials and stakeholders are its priority. The league confirmed it is awaiting official match reports from the referees and Ngezi Platinum Stars and has requested a detailed club report to establish the facts.
“The League strongly condemns any form of violence and will not hesitate to take appropriate disciplinary action where necessary in line with the PSL Rules and Regulations,” the PSL said.
What happens next
Disciplinary pathway: PSL will review referee reports and Ngezi’s submission before determining sanctions.
National-team status: Any ZIFA decision regarding Chiragwi’s Warriors role remains pending.
Safeguarding lens: The incident has reignited debate on emotional intelligence, leadership standards and player welfare in Zimbabwean football.
