Former Dynamos and Warriors striker Tauya Murewa is one such players who illuminated the Zimbabwean Premiership in the era gone by.
Nicknamed ‘The Flying Doctor,’ Tauya was one of the fastest and flawless players to ever play for the most Warriors promising contigent ‘the Dream Team’ and the glamour boys as Dynamos is affectionately known.
During his prime time, Murehwa earned himself a nickname ‘The Flying Doctor owing to his swiftness, and also because he was a medical doctor by profession.
Tauya joined the PSL when he was still a medical student at University of Zimbabwe. He quickly took the football arean by storm by his flawless moves, and most crowning moment came with being voted Soccer Star in 1995.
Tauya started playing soccer for UZ before he joined Dynamos and was crowned soccer player of the year in 1995.
Tauya could have been crowned soccer King yet again in 1997, however the selectors (sports journalists) were divided along club affiliations denied him the throne.
In the discord that ensued, Hwange’s Walter Tshuma topped the list as likely winner and however sponsors Delta Beverages pulled out of the partnership, not wanting to be associated with the discord.
Apparently, they was something unique about Tauya from an early age, he was first team player to shine at St Theresa primary school at grade 5 in Mvuma.
When he moved to Holy Cross in Chirumanzu for his high school education Tauya was already playing for Mvuma Division 2 side Athens Mine.
He continued to play for Athen Mine in his first year at University of Zimbabwe.
The team missed promotion to Division 1 to Lancashire Steel on the last day of the 1992 season.
He also helped help Athens road to winning the Lonrho Cup although he did not play in the final.
Tauya turned out for UZ before that dream move to Dynamos where he used to light up Rufaro with those dribbling skills and precision ball distribution.
From Dynamos the Flying Doctor moved to SA where he played for Ajax in Cape Town, Black Leopards, Hellenics in 1999.
He played for Supersport in 2001 before moving to Cape Town Spurs in 2002 later moving to Bush Bucks.
He also had a dream combination with Peter Ndlovu turning out for the Warriors when they clobbered Namibia 5-2 in 1998.
