Motherwell became the first team to reach the knockout stages of the Premier Sports Cup after a commanding 3-0 win over Morton in Group G, with Zimbabwe
warriors forward Tawanda Maswanhise delivering a standout performance.
Maswanhise, who has made an impressive start to the season, scored twice late in the second half to seal the win for the Steelmen. His first came in the 83rd minute, calmly finishing from Liam Gordon’s through-ball to double Motherwell’s lead after Apostolos Stamatelopoulos had opened the scoring earlier in the half.
But it was Maswanhise’s second that stole the headlines. Cutting in from the left, he unleashed a stunning 25-yard curling strike into the top corner during stoppage time — his fourth goal of the new campaign.
Motherwell had looked lively in the first half with some slick build-up around the Morton area, but were fortunate not to concede when Paul McGinn appeared to bring down Tomi Adeloye as he raced through on goal. Referee Ryan Lee allowed play to continue, judging that McGinn had made contact with the ball.
The deadlock was broken in the 52nd minute when Johnny Koutroumbis’s powerful effort was tipped onto the bar by James Storer, only for Stamatelopoulos to pounce on the rebound and fire home.
The result sees Motherwell go five points clear at the top of Group G, leaving Morton still with an outside chance of qualifying as one of the best runners-up.
