Talks Progressing: Eymael Emerges as Strong Contender for Warriors Job, Close Source
Belgian coach Luc Eymael has emerged as one of the latest names linked to the Zimbabwe Warriors’ head coach vacancy, with reports suggesting that early discussions could soon take place between his representatives and the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA).
Eymael, who recently left Chippa United after a brief spell in the South African Betway Premiership, is reportedly keen to return to international management and believes his vast experience across Africa aligns with what ZIFA is seeking in its next coach.
A source close to the veteran tactician confirmed to Soccer Laduma that preliminary contact has already been made:
“Yes, coach Eymael is aware of the position in Zimbabwe and he is interested. There has been some contact and initial discussions, but nothing has been finalised. He feels his experience in African football fits what ZIFA is looking for.”
Eymael’s coaching résumé includes stints in South Africa, DR Congo, Tanzania, Egypt, and Tunisia, where he earned a reputation for his tactical acumen and emphasis on structured, attacking football.
ZIFA recently issued an open call for applications to fill the Warriors’ top job following the dismissal of German coach Michael Nees last week. The association has reportedly received over 300 applications, including high-profile names such as Chris Hughton, Harry Redknapp, and Bruce Grobbelaar.
In its job advert, ZIFA outlined strict new criteria aimed at modernising the national team setup. Candidates must possess a CAF Pro or UEFA Pro Licence (or equivalent international qualification), along with demonstrable experience in top-tier African competitions like the CAF Champions League, AFCON, or COSAFA Cup.
The association emphasised that the ideal candidate should embody a “modern, data-driven, performance-based football philosophy” as Zimbabwe seeks to re-establish itself among Africa’s elite.
Negotiations Loom as Former Chippa Coach Eyes Zimbabwe Post
Eymael’s extensive African experience — which includes coaching Young Africans SC in Tanzania, AS Vita Club in DR Congo, and Aduana Stars in Ghana — places him among those who could fit that vision.
While ZIFA has kept its shortlist confidential, insiders suggest that Eymael’s name is among those being seriously considered as the Warriors prepare for two international friendlies in November against Algeria and Qatar, before heading to the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco in December.
If appointed, Eymael would be tasked with stabilising the team, instilling discipline and tactical identity, and guiding Zimbabwe through a challenging AFCON group that includes Egypt, Angola, and South Africa.
