Warriors head coach Michael Nees has stood by his decision to name Marvelous Nakamba in Zimbabwe’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Benin 🇧🇯 and Rwanda 🇷🇼, despite the midfielder’s lack of competitive football at Luton Town this season.
Nakamba has not featured since August, prompting questions about his match fitness. But Nees said the 30-year-old’s leadership and tactical discipline make him indispensable for the national team, particularly with key absentees in midfield.
“Marvelous Nakamba might not be one hundred percent, but he also had a good pre-season at a high level. We need his experience. Remember, Munetsi is suspended for the Benin game, Andy Rinomhota has to sort out his issues, so we can’t afford to have a midfield combination of rookies,” Nees explained to local media.
With Marshall Munetsi suspended and Andy Rinomhota unavailable, Nakamba is expected to anchor the midfield when Zimbabwe face Benin on 5 September. His presence is seen as vital in balancing a squad that mixes emerging talent with experienced internationals.
