Warriors assistant coach Takesure Chiragwi has temporarily stepped down from his national duties following a shocking incident in which he was caught on live television slapping his own player, McDonald Makuwe, during a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) match.

The altercation took place at Rufaro Stadium during Ngezi Platinum Starsโ€™ clash with Dynamos FC, and was broadcast live on ZTV, prompting widespread condemnation from supporters and football authorities alike.

Chiragwi Issues Public Apology

In a statement released on Sunday, Chiragwi expressed deep remorse for his actions:

โ€œI wish to sincerely and unreservedly apologise for my regrettable conduct during the match between Ngezi Platinum Stars and Dynamos FC on Saturday, 4 October 2025. My behaviour on the touchline was wholly inappropriate and unbefitting of my role as a coach, leader and ambassador of the sport.

I would like to extend my heartfelt apologies to McDonald Makuwe for my actions. I have since spoken with him personally, and I am grateful for his understanding and forgiveness.

I also apologise to Ngezi Platinum Stars, the Premier Soccer League, ZIFA, and the broader football fraternity. My conduct did not reflect the values and professionalism expected at this level of the game.

To uphold integrity and allow disciplinary processes to unfold fairly, I have voluntarily stepped aside from my duties with the Zimbabwe national team ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.โ€

Disciplinary Action and Fallout

The PSL has confirmed that it is awaiting full match and club reports before determining possible sanctions, stressing that any form of violence will not be tolerated.

The incident โ€” replayed repeatedly across social and mainstream media โ€” has ignited debates about coaching ethics, player welfare, and accountability within local football.

Chiragwiโ€™s departure comes at a crucial time for the Warriors, who face South Africa on 10 October in Durban before travelling to Mbombela to meet Lesothoย four days later.

With emotions still running high, the controversy threatens to overshadow the Warriorsโ€™ World Cup qualifying preparations โ€” a reminder of how quickly discipline and professionalism can shape the image of the national game.
