Munashe Garananga marked a milestone moment in his European career by scoring his first-ever goal in the Danish Superliga, capping off an unforgettable weekend for Zimbabwean footballers at home and abroad.
The FC Copenhagen defender rose high in the 80th minute to power home Jordan Larsson’s cross, earning his side a 1–1 draw against Midtjylland on Sunday. It was a dramatic cameo for the 23-year-old, who had started the match on the bench and made an immediate impact just 17 minutes after being introduced.
However, the joy was bittersweet — Garananga was shown a straight red card deep into stoppage time following a VAR review for a late challenge on an opponent. Despite the dismissal, his overall performance and debut goal underlined his growing influence in Europe and boosted his confidence ahead of national duty.
Garananga, who joined Copenhagen from KV Mechelen in Belgium last year, is among the key names in the Zimbabwe Warriors squad set to face South Africa and Lesotho this week in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Although Zimbabwe are no longer in contention for qualification, coach Michael Nees is using the matches to test tactical combinations and build for the 2025 AFCON finals.
Weekend of Zimbabwean Brilliance
The Warriors camp heads to Durban riding a wave of momentum after several standout displays by their stars:
Washington Arubi was the hero for Marumo Gallants, saving three penalties and converting one himself to knock Mamelodi Sundowns out of the Carling Knockout Cup.
Daniel Msendami also scored from the spot in the same shootout, deepening Sundowns’ woes.
Thando Ngwenya found the net for AmaZulu against Kaizer Chiefs, continuing his strong run of form.
Knox Mutizwa returned with a bang for Richards Bay, bagging a brace and the Man of the Match award versus Chippa United.
Veteran stopper Elvis Chipezeze was also named MOTM in another Carling Cup match after a commanding display.
In England, Marshall Munetsi impressed again for Wolves, unleashing a fierce volley that forced Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen into an own goal.
With spirits high, the Warriors have arrived in Durban to face Bafana Bafana before playing Lesotho. Despite the team being at the bottom of the Group C table, the fixtures are crucial in laying the foundation for a new generation of Warriors aiming for continental glory.
