Marshall Munetsi scored his first Premier League goal as his stock continues to rise at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The 28-year-old is proving to be worth a gamble for Wolverhampton Wanderers coach Vitor Pereira. The latter has been audacious to fix the energetic Zimbabwean as a forward, away from his usual midfield role.
While he failed to hit the target in his first five matches, he finally got it right against Everton on Saturday night at the Molineux Stadium.
Munetsi equalised for Wolves in the 40th minute after Everton opened the scoresheet seven minutes earlier via Jack Harrison. Despite scoring their goal, Munetsi was withdrawn at the break and was replaced by Pablo Sarabia.
After Ipswich’s defeat at Crystal Palace, Wolves knew a result – any result – would push them closer to Premier League safety.
As it happened, even a draw was enough to put a positive end to the day as Wolves moved six points clear of the drop zone.
Vitor Pereira’s side fell behind when Jack Harrison gave the Toffees the lead but Zimbabwe international Marshall Munetsi equalised five minutes before the break to score his first goal for the club.
In a cagey second half of few chances, Wolves came closest to scoring the winner but Jordan Pickford was equal to Jorgen Strand Larsen’s effort.
The match won’t live long in the memory but Wolves fans won’t care if this is the point that keeps them up.
Munetsi’s goal was the first for a Zimbabwean player in the English top tier after Benjani last netted for Man City 11 years ago. Munetsi made a difference for Wolves physically with his height and strength. Munetsi also showed composure with a clever finish inside the box to score his first goal. He was unfortunately substituted at half-time with a suspected injury.
