Isaac Mabaya Suffers Achilles Injury, Set for Liverpool Return

Zimbabwean defender Isaac Mabaya will return to his parent club Liverpool after sustaining a serious Achilles injury while on loan at Wigan Athletic.

The 20-year-old, who joined Wigan on a season-long loan from the Reds, picked up the injury during the Carabao Cup first-round clash against Notts County last Wednesday. Following an assessment with a specialist in London, it was confirmed that the setback requires surgery, ruling him out for the foreseeable future.

Wigan head coach Ryan Lowe expressed his disappointment at the news, telling Wigan Today:
“Isaac went to London on Wednesday to speak to a specialist, and it has been confirmed he has an Achilles issue. We’ll liaise with Liverpool and, when the time’s right, he’ll need surgery. I’ve spoken to Isaac, and he’s understandably disappointed — I’m just gutted for him.”

Lowe added that while the full recovery timeline is yet to be determined, Mabaya will head back to Liverpool for treatment and rehabilitation.
“Obviously we wish him all the best, and he’s in the best possible hands at Liverpool,” the Latics boss said.
