Highlanders FC appoint Benjani Mwaruwari as head coach with US$500K backing

Highlanders receive luxury 75-seater coach as Chivayo backs Benjani era

Zimbabwean giants Highlanders FC have confirmed the appointment of former Jomo Cosmos striker Benjani Mwaruwari as their new head coach for the 2026 season, a move underpinned by a significant R10.4 million financial injection.

Mwaruwari’s arrival comes weeks after Bosso briefly announced Thabo Senong as head coach before withdrawing the offer, paving the way for a high-profile change in direction.

The appointment has been bankrolled by prominent businessman Wicknell Chivayo, who pledged a total of US$585,000 (approximately R10.4 million) to mark the former Portsmouth and Manchester City striker’s return to Zimbabwean football—this time from the technical area.

Benjani’s professional journey famously began at Jomo Cosmos under the mentorship of Jomo Sono, before a swift rise to Europe with Grasshopper Club Zürich and Ligue 1 outfit AJ Auxerre. He later enjoyed stints in the English Premier League with Manchester City and Portsmouth, before returning to South Africa to feature for Bidvest Wits and Chippa United.

The announcement was accompanied by details of a substantial sponsorship package from Chivayo, who said the gesture honours a promise made to his late uncle, former Zimbabwean Vice President John Landa Nkomo.

The package includes a US$300,000 (R4.8 million) cash injection earmarked for Mwaruwari’s salary, signing-on fees, and the settlement of outstanding player arrears. In addition, Chivayo has purchased a brand-new 75-seater Higer Executive coach valued at US$285,000 (R4.6 million), complete with leather interiors, Wi-Fi and executive onboard facilities.

Chivayo has also committed to providing a car of Mwaruwari’s choice as part of the new contract.

“The expertise and pedigree of Mkoma Benji speaks for itself,” Chivayo said. “His exposure to football at regional level in South Africa and in Europe makes him the best coaching option for iBosso.”

Despite the scale of the donation, Chivayo moved to dispel speculation of a takeover, stressing that his involvement remains purely supportive. He reiterated that his sole ambition is to see Highlanders challenge strongly and lift the 2026 Premier Soccer League title.
