From Warriors to Europe’s Biggest Stage: Garananga in Champions League Action

Zimbabwe centre-back Munashe Garananga is set to follow in the footsteps of Warriors greats after FC Copenhagen sealed their place in the UEFA Champions League group stages with a 3-1 aggregate win over Switzerland’s FC Basel.

The 23-year-old defender was named in the squad for Copenhagen’s opening group fixture against Bayer Leverkusen but watched from the bench as his side drew 2-2 in dramatic fashion.

Garananga now joins a select list of Zimbabweans to reach Europe’s top competition, including Bruce Grobbelaar, Norman Mapeza, Benjani Mwaruwari and Marvelous Nakamba. Among them, Mwaruwari remains the only player from Zimbabwe to score in the tournament.

Copenhagen’s encouraging display was undone by stoppage-time heartbreak, but the Warriors defender will be eager to make his debut as the campaign progresses.
