Elvis Chipezeze Warns Bafana: We’re Going All Out, Expect a Battle, Not a Walkover

Zimbabwe goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze has issued a bold warning to Bafana Bafana, insisting the Warriors will not be pushovers when the two sides clash in Friday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

The veteran shot-stopper, who has rediscovered his best form with Magesi FC in the South African Betway Premiership, says Zimbabwe are determined to make a statement despite being out of contention for qualification.

“We are not taking these games lightly,” said Chipezeze. “Every qualifier we’ve played, we’ve competed. These next two games — against Bafana Bafana and Lesotho — are not just fixtures, they are part of our preparation for AFCON. We’re going all out.”

Warriors Playing for Pride and Progress

While the Warriors sit at the bottom of Group C, Chipezeze believes the match offers more than just points — it’s about identity, rebuilding, and pride.

“It’s an opportunity for us to show where we are as a nation,” he explained. “We’re preparing for AFCON, and these games give us a good test. Playing against strong teams like South Africa helps us measure our growth and readiness.”

Despite Bafana needing victory to keep their World Cup hopes alive, the Zimbabwe camp is motivated to spoil the party in Durban — a venue that has hosted some of the fiercest Southern African derbies in recent years.

A Veteran’s Return — Redemption and Gratitude

The 35-year-old goalkeeper’s return to the Warriors setup marks a personal milestone after several years away from international duty. Once criticised for inconsistency, Chipezeze has fought his way back with resilience and hard work.

“It’s always special to wear the national badge,” he said. “To be called back after so long is an honour. At international level, you meet players with different qualities and experiences — that helps me grow and improve my own game.”

He was also quick to credit his club for helping him rediscover his rhythm.

“Without Magesi FC, I wouldn’t be here. The chairman, the coaches, and my teammates have supported me through everything. So when I represent Zimbabwe, I’m also representing Magesi — they’ve been part of this journey.”

Focus Shifts to Durban Showdown

As Bafana Bafana chase qualification, the Warriors arrive with renewed spirit under coach Michael Nees, with a blend of youth and experience — including Marshall Munetsi, Walter Musona, and Washington Arubi, who remains Zimbabwe’s No.1.

Chipezeze’s presence adds valuable depth and leadership in camp, and his message to the neighbours is clear: “We’re not just here to fill the fixture list.”
