Benjani Mwaruwari Honoured at the Etihad During Manchester Derby
Former Zimbabwe Warriors captain and Manchester City legend Benjani Mwaruwari was a special guest at the Etihad Stadium during Sunday’s Manchester derby against Manchester United.
As part of Manchester City’s tradition of celebrating their former stars, the ex-striker joined the pre-match panel of analysts alongside former England defender Micah Richards.
Mwaruwari, now 46, is remembered with great affection by City fans, particularly for his unforgettable debut goal in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford in February 2008, which sealed a famous 2-1 victory for the Blues.
Career Highlights
Manchester City (2008–2010): Scored seven goals in 23 appearances, with his derby strike cementing his place in club folklore.
Portsmouth (2006–2008, 2011): Enjoyed his best spell in England, winning Portsmouth’s Player of the Season (2006/07) and playing a key role in their Premier League survival battles.

On the international stage, Mwaruwari captained the Zimbabwe Warriors and represented the nation in the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt. He scored 10 goals in over 30 appearances and remains one of Zimbabwe’s most iconic football exports.
