Bosso shake-up: Soma-Phiri axed, new faces installed

Benjani era begins with sackings at Highlanders

Former Highlanders midfielder Amini Soma-Phiri has been relieved of his duties following the appointment of Bruce Tshuma as team manager at the Premiership outfit.

Tshuma’s arrival comes shortly after Bulawayo giants Highlanders FC unveiled former Warriors and Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari as their new head coach. Mwaruwari replaces Dutch tactician Pieter De Jongh at the helm.

Affectionately known as “The Undertaker”, Mwaruwari will be assisted by Mkhokheli “Mshoza” Dube, who takes over from Try Ncube as part of the reshaped technical team.

According to the chairman’s report, Bosso have also parted ways with fitness trainer Abraham Mbaiwa and goalkeepers’ coach Tembo Chuma. Mbaiwa has since linked up with Kelvin Kaindu at newly promoted Hardrock, while Chuma has moved to MWOS. Their roles have been filled by Majahawodwa Ndlovu, with a former Highlanders junior goalkeeper also expected to join the setup.

Addressing members at the club’s annual general meeting, Bosso chairman Kenneth Mhlophe said the changes followed an extensive review of the technical department after a disappointing 2025 campaign.

“Following the conclusion of the 2025 season, management undertook a comprehensive assessment of the technical department,” Mhlophe said. “After wide consultations, the club appointed Benjani Mwaruwari as head coach for the 2026 season.”

He added that the decision was taken after unforeseen challenges delayed the finalisation of Thabo Senong’s engagement, prompting further changes aimed at strengthening capacity, improving performance standards and restoring competitiveness in the upcoming season.

Mhlophe also confirmed that Bosso 90, despite narrowly avoiding relegation, will continue to serve as the club’s primary feeder team.

“The team survived relegation last season and management remains optimistic about improved performances going forward,” he said. “We are committed to channelling more resources into youth development, which we envision becoming the long-term backbone of Highlanders Football Club.”

He revealed that plans are already in motion to introduce a structured training and development programme designed to produce players ready for first-team football.

“At present, around five Bosso 90 players are training with the senior side and being assessed. Management is hopeful that some will be registered for Premier Soccer League action.”
