Benin vs Zimbabwe: Cheetahs Coach Targets 3 Points as Warriors Prepare for Tough Battle

Benin Eye Victory While Warriors Brace for Stern Test in Abidjan

On the eve of Friday’s Group C World Cup qualifier, Benin coach Gernot Rohr and captain Steve Mounié addressed the media with confidence, stressing belief in the Cheetahs’ chances against Zimbabwe. The clash at Alassane Ouattara Ebimpé Olympic Stadium will also feature a special tribute to legendary striker Razack Omotoyossi.

Some images have emerged from the pre-match press conference held by national coach Gernot Rohr, who was joined by team captain Steve Mounié.

The Beninese delegation confirmed that players will wear a commemorative armband and that FIFA has approved a minute’s silence before kick-off in honour of Omotoyossi.

Rohr reflected on the teams’ previous 2-2 draw, pointing out attacking positives while stressing defensive lapses to avoid. He also welcomed the return of key forwards, describing them as vital to Benin’s hopes.

For his part, Mounié said he was “100% focused on the selection” despite the setback of a failed transfer. Both men reiterated their call for FIFA to clarify the eligibility case involving South Africa, who could be docked 3 points for fielding a banned player, while insisting that the Cheetahs still believe in qualification.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s Warriors continue preparations under coach Michael Nees, who has warned of a tough encounter in Abidjan but remains confident in his squad’s mix of youth and experience.

Kick-off is scheduled for Friday, 5 September 2025 at 6 PM CAT.
