Zimbabwe captain Marvelous Nakamba has been handed a significant confidence boost just weeks before the Africa Cup of Nations, after earning his first start under new Luton Town manager Jack Wilshere.
Nakamba, part of the Warriors’ provisional squad for Morocco 2025, returned to Luton’s starting XI on Wednesday night in the EFL Trophy Round of 16, helping the Hatters cruise to a dominant 4–0 win over Exeter City at Kenilworth Road.
It was the midfielder’s third appearance of the season and marked an important step in his recovery and reintegration at club level after struggling with fitness earlier in the campaign.
The 31-year-old had missed the opening stages of the season due to a muscle issue and, despite turning out for the Warriors during the international break, had found opportunities limited on his return to England. Wilshere’s decision to restore him to the line-up for a knockout fixture signals renewed trust in the experienced midfielder.
Nakamba delivered a composed performance in the centre of the park as Luton built a 3–0 lead before the break, eventually sealing progression into the last 16. His display comes at a crucial time, with Warriors coach Marian Marinica set to name the final 23-man AFCON squad next week.
Zimbabwe open their Group B campaign on 22 December and will rely heavily on Nakamba’s leadership and experience should he be confirmed in the travelling party.
For the Warriors skipper, Wednesday night’s outing was more than just a cup appearance—it was a clear indication that his sharpness and match rhythm are returning just in time for the continental showpiece.
