From CAF Glory to Crime Scene — Former Dynamos and CAPS United Players in Dagga Bust

Two former Premier Soccer League players — Tumai Matsika, also known as Abbas Amidu and Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga — have been arrested by police on allegations of drug trafficking after being found in possession of a massive 750 kilograms of dagga.

The pair, both once key figures for Harare giants Dynamos and CAPS United, were reportedly intercepted on Friday, October 3, 2025, after their silver Honda Shuttle (registration AGP 6776) was stopped and searched along the Kwekwe–Kadoma Highway.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the arrest:

“The ZRP confirms the arrest of soccer players Tumai Matsika, also known as Abbas Amidu (29), and Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga (41) for drug trafficking. The two were found in possession of 750 kilograms of dagga valued at USD 75,000 in a silver Honda Shuttle vehicle, registration number AGP 6776.”

Amidu, a former CAPS United striker, was part of the celebrated squad that won the 2016 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title and represented Zimbabwe in the CAF Champions League. His career also included spells with FC Platinum, Ngezi Platinum, and Black Leopards in South Africa.

Mhlanga, on the other hand, is best remembered for his time with Dynamos, where he featured in the team that reached the semifinals of the 2008 CAF Champions League, one of DeMbare’s finest continental runs.

The arrests have sent shockwaves through Zimbabwe’s football community, with fans expressing dismay over the fall from grace of two players once regarded as rising talents in the domestic league.

Police say the suspects are currently in custody pending court appearance, as investigations into the source and intended destination of the drugs continue.
