Thando Ngwenya’s Goal Rush in SA Puts Him in Warriors Spotlight

Former FC Platinum striker Thandolwenkosi “Thando” Ngwenya continues to impress in his debut Betway Premiership season with AmaZulu, strengthening calls for him to become a key part of Zimbabwe’s long-term attacking project.

Ngwenya struck again on Wednesday, scoring his fourth goal of the campaign in a 1–1 draw with Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium. The 22-year-old rose highest in the 21st minute to head home from close range, briefly giving Usuthu the lead before Mduduzi Shabalala equalised for Amakhosi.

Warriors Recognition

On the back of his strong form in South Africa, Ngwenya has now been called up to the Zimbabwe Warriors squad for the second time and featured in the national setup for the first time during the last FIFA break. His selection reflects ZIFA and coach Michael Nees’ commitment to refreshing the forward line with younger, developmental options who can grow into leading roles.

From FC Platinum to AmaZulu

Ngwenya joined AmaZulu in July on a two-year deal after leaving FC Platinum, where he scored nine league goals last season. His transition to the South African Premiership has been seamless—he has already climbed within touching distance of the league’s top scorers, trailing only Bradley Grobler and Iqraam Rayners (six goals each).

Why He Matters for Zimbabwe

Clinical instinct: Four goals already in South Africa against strong opposition.

Aerial power: His headed finish against Chiefs underlines a key weapon for international football.

Age profile: At just 22, Ngwenya is a long-term investment with peak years ahead.

Warriors fit: His versatility allows him to play centrally or drift wide, complementing Zimbabwe’s existing forwards.

ZimbabweWarriorsZone Verdict

Ngwenya’s rise is timely. With Zimbabwe seeking to rebuild after a turbulent qualification campaign, the Warriors have found not just another striker—but a future focal point who can be developed into a consistent international goalscorer. His AmaZulu exploits prove he has the hunger and ability; now, international experience will shape him into the striker Zimbabwe needs.
