Tempers Flare as Warriors Forward Confronts Journalist at Warriors Training
Tempers boiled over at the Warriors’ training session in Johannesburg on Monday when striker Tinotenda Kadewere threatened veteran journalist Yvonne Mangunda, accusing her of posting negative stories about him on Facebook.
The confrontation, which unfolded at Orlando Stadium ahead of Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Rwanda, brought training to a temporary halt. Witnesses say Kadewere poked and verbally threatened Mangunda in an angry outburst before being restrained.
Although the former Lyon forward initially insisted he would “beat up” the journalist, he later issued an apology, admitting he had acted out of anger and frustration. Warriors team manager Clemence Matawu also apologised on behalf of the team, calling the incident regrettable.
Social Media Reactions
The clash triggered a wave of reactions on social media. Some fans condemned Kadewere’s behaviour, with one describing it as “gender-based violence” and another insisting “players should be disciplined because they are role models.”
Others, however, were more sympathetic, suggesting journalists in Zimbabwe are often too harsh on players. One fan wrote, “Sometimes journalists go too far with criticism, even great nations protect their players,” while another argued, “If he apologised, then he acted in the heat of the moment.”
A number of supporters criticised Kadewere’s footballing form rather than the incident itself, pointing to his low goal return and questioning his place in the national team.
Focus Back on the Pitch
The Warriors will be hoping the incident does not overshadow preparations for Tuesday evening’s World Cup qualifier against Rwanda in Johannesburg. With Zimbabwe already out of contention for qualification, the team will be playing for pride and momentum ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations later this year.
