Zimbabwe Shift Focus to AFCON as They Face Rwanda in Final World Cup Qualifier

Zimbabwe will wrap up their 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers campaign on Tuesday with a Group C fixture against Rwanda at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa. Kick-off is set for 3 pm CAT.

The Warriors’ hopes of reaching the global tournament ended last Friday after a 1-0 defeat to Benin in Abidjan, leaving them out of contention for either the top spot or the playoff route. Despite the setback, coach Michael Nees says his side will treat the remaining matches seriously, while also using them to prepare for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

“It’s now a project towards Afcon. At the same time, we must be fair competitors for other teams still fighting for qualification. We want to win and build a winning mood heading into Morocco,” Nees said. The German coach also hinted at giving new players opportunities as he looks to broaden his squad options.

Vice-captain Marshall Munetsi returns from suspension and trained with the squad at the University of Johannesburg on Sunday. There are no injury concerns in the camp. Defender Jordan Zemura echoed the coach’s sentiments, stressing that the team must use these matches to “grow and build consistency” ahead of Afcon.

Fans can follow the game live on SuperSport TV, ZBC TV, and FIFA+. Tickets are on sale via Open Tickets at R75 for general entry.
