Warriors legend Benjani Mwaruwari has endorsed the squad named by head coach Michael Nees for Zimbabwe’s upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda, describing it as “balanced in all departments.”
Mwaruwari, who once served as assistant coach under Zdravko Logarusic and now works with Plymouth Argyle’s youth teams, said Nees faced a welcome selection dilemma.
“The coach had a good headache in finalising this squad. Overall, the team looks good and is balanced in all areas,” said the former Manchester City striker.
He acknowledged that several in-form players – among them Marumo Gallants winger Daniel Msendami, Scotland-based forward Tymon Machope, and Simba Bhora duo Junior Makunike and Emmanuel Ziocha – could also have merited inclusion based on recent performances.
“There are players who were in good form but didn’t make the squad. But as a coach, you pick who fits your plans for specific matches. To those left out, my advice is to stay patient, stay motivated, and keep fighting for your place. That’s how football works — I’m speaking from experience,” Mwaruwari said.
On the selection of captain Marvelous Nakamba, who has yet to feature for Luton Town this season amid transfer speculation, Mwaruwari expressed strong support for Nees’ decision.
“Nakamba is the captain, and leaving him out might not have been the right call, especially with these qualifiers doubling as preparation for the AFCON finals in December,” he explained.
With vice-captain Marshall Munetsi suspended for the opening clash against Benin due to accumulated yellow cards, Mwaruwari underlined the importance of Nakamba’s leadership.
“Yes, Teenage Hadebe is the third captain, but I think one of the top two needed to be there for the match in Benin. Nakamba is training, and the facilities in England are top-notch. We might be surprised by his fitness levels. Combined with his experience at both club and international level, he remains a key figure.”
Mwaruwari closed by wishing the Warriors success in their decisive fixtures, stressing that balance, leadership and experience will be critical in determining the outcome.
