FIFA has issued a strong statement condemning the conduct of the Senegal national team following controversial scenes during the AFCON 2025 final, despite the Teranga Lions going on to lift the trophy.
The showpiece match was overshadowed by a series of flashpoints, including disputes over refereeing decisions and repeated attempts by Senegalese players to interfere with goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s towels. Tensions peaked late in the game when Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch after a stoppage-time penalty was awarded to Morocco, a move widely interpreted as a protest against perceived officiating bias.
The incident drew global attention and sparked widespread criticism across the football world.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino labelled the behaviour “simply unacceptable” and confirmed that the matter had been referred to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for further action.
“We strongly condemn the behaviour of some Senegalese players and members of the technical staff,” Infantino said. “Leaving the pitch in this manner and any form of violence cannot be tolerated. Teams must always respect referees’ decisions and the Laws of the Game.”
Infantino added that the scenes witnessed during the final “must be condemned and never repeated,” warning that such conduct undermines the integrity and image of football globally.
