Mnangagwa Hands Over Vehicles to Footballers, Outstanding Athletes

It was a morning filled with emotion, celebration and national pride at State House on Saturday, where President Emmerson Mnangagwa presented brand-new vehicles to some of Zimbabwe’s finest athletes in recognition of their outstanding achievements.

The rare gesture, described by many as a “national thank-you,” saw sports stars from football, cricket and other disciplines honoured for lifting the country’s flag high in recent months.

Mutinhiri’s Journey From Career-Threatening Injury to Triumph

Herentals Queens captain Tabeth Mutinhiri was among the most visibly moved recipients. Just over a year ago, an ankle injury sustained during training at the National Sports Stadium’s B Arena threatened to end her career and derail her dream of playing in the CAF Women’s Champions League.

But through determined rehabilitation and unwavering support from her club, Mutinhiri returned stronger than ever. She not only reclaimed her place in the team but also led Herentals Queens to a remarkable fourth consecutive Women’s Premier Soccer League title.

Sitting behind the wheel of her new Ford Ranger, tears streamed down her face.

“This is unbelievable,” Mutinhiri said. “This reward isn’t just for me — it’s for women’s football and everyone who believed in me.”

Jalai Honoured After Dynamos’ Cup Triumph

Also receiving keys to a new vehicle was Dynamos captain Emmanuel Jalai, who recently guided the Glamour Boys to a historic third Chibuku Super Cup title after their 1–0 victory over Triangle at Gibbo Stadium.

Still buoyant from the win, Jalai said the recognition from the country’s highest office was deeply meaningful:

“It’s a huge honour. When the President acknowledges sport, it motivates us even more. This gesture makes football beautiful for everyone across Zimbabwe.”

He was accompanied by club chairman Bernard Marriot-Lusengo and other Dynamos officials who joined in the celebrations.

Raza Honoured in Absentia

Chevrons cricket captain Sikandar Raza, who led Zimbabwe to qualification for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, was also among those rewarded. Although he was unable to attend the ceremony, officials confirmed that his vehicle awaits him as a tribute to his leadership and impact on the global stage.

Recognition Across Sporting Disciplines

The President’s gesture comes barely a week after Walter Musona, captain of Premier Soccer League surprise package Scottland, received a vehicle for guiding the newcomers to a podium finish in their debut top-flight season.

Herentals Queens president Innocent Benza praised the initiative:

“This vehicle belongs to Tabeth. Recognising athletes at this level is rare and deeply appreciated.”

President Mnangagwa has previously honoured successful national teams and athletes, including the Sables rugby team and boxer Kuda Chiwandire, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to rewarding sporting excellence.
