Bonne Returns, Billiat Dropped as Marinica Names Provisional AFCON Squad

Marian Marinica names 51-man provisional Warriors squad for 2025 AFCON

Warriors head coach Marian Mario Marinica has unveiled a 51-man provisional squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as Zimbabwe intensifies preparations for its return to the continental showpiece.

The expanded list marks Marinica’s first major squad announcement since taking charge earlier this month, and it comes just weeks before the tournament kicks off on 21 December in Morocco. The Warriors will face Egypt, Angola and South Africa in Group C.

Zimbabwe opens its campaign against Egypt’s Pharaohs on 22 December at the Grand Stade d’Agadir, with kick-off at 7pm CAT. The team then travels to Marrakech for a Boxing Day meeting with Angola on 26 December, before closing the group phase against neighbours South Africa on 29 December.

The most eye-catching decision is the exclusion of Khama Billiat, who has now missed all three squads under Marinica—including the recent friendlies against Algeria and Qatar. In contrast, Macauley Bonne has been recalled to a Warriors provisional squad for the first time since 2022, signalling a potential return for the England-based striker.
