Marinica Preaches “Fast and Very Fast” Football as Warriors Begin New Era

New Zimbabwe Warriors coach Marian “Mario” Marinica has urged his players to quickly adapt to his trademark “fast and very fast” style of play as he begins his tenure with the national team ahead of Thursday’s friendly against Algeria in Jeddah.

The Romanian-born coach, who replaced Michael Nees two weeks ago, has wasted no time outlining his vision — a philosophy centred on speed, discipline, and direct attacking football. Marinica believes that quick thinking, swift movement, and sharper execution will help Zimbabwe rediscover their goal-scoring touch after four consecutive matches without a goal.

“My philosophy means think fast, act fast, move fast — and be well prepared,” Marinica told journalists from Saudi Arabia. “We have the quality; now we need to be more direct and play with purpose. The boys have reacted well, but I want them to threaten the opponent’s goal more.”

Known for guiding Malawi to the Round of 16 at the 2021 AFCON (played in 2022) — where his side famously beat Zimbabwe 2–1 — Marinica now wants to help the Warriors end their long-standing Nations Cup curse by progressing beyond the group stage for the first time in history.

He emphasised that success will not only depend on tactics but also mentality, professionalism, and patriotism.

“Playing for the national team is an honour. You must represent the country with heart and hard work,” he said. “There’s a difference between being professional and having professionalism — it’s about living football, not treating it as a gift.”

Despite travel delays that affected the squad’s early sessions, Marinica said he was impressed by the players’ commitment and fitness in training. He expects his side to display energy, determination, and unity against a strong Algeria team already qualified for the 2026 World Cup.

“Winning requires passion, desire, and hard work,” he added. “I want players who give 100 percent for the badge.”

Zimbabwe will face Algeria on Thursday in Jeddah before heading to Doha for their second friendly against Qatar on November 17, both serving as key tune-ups for the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco next month.
