Reality Check for Zimbabwe After Winless World Cup Qualification Effort

Zimbabwe’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign ended in humiliation with a 1-0 loss to Lesotho, leaving the Warriors bottom of Group C without a single win — five draws and five defeats from ten matches. Coach Michael Nees’ side struggled for identity and consistency, often outplayed and unable to convert effort into results.

Despite the failure, Nees insists the qualifiers were “building blocks” for AFCON 2025, but doubts persist over his tactics, team cohesion, and ability to inspire belief after such a demoralising run. Fitness issues, a weak domestic league, and lack of goal-scoring options compound the challenge as Zimbabwe prepare to face Egypt, Angola, and South Africa in a tough AFCON group.

While Nees has promoted professionalism and integrity, experts warn that without tangible improvement, Zimbabwe risk another disappointment. The upcoming AFCON will be his true test — a chance either for redemption or to confirm a downward spiral for the Warriors.
