Chahwanda Stadium Nears Completion: Zimbabwe Set to End CAF Stadium Ban Woes

Zimbabwe’s long-standing stadium crisis could soon be over as Chahwanda Stadium, a modern football arena in Kwekwe, nears completion — promising to end years of “home away from home” fixtures for both the Warriors and local clubs.

Since 2020, Zimbabwe has been forced to host international and CAF matches in South Africa, after the National Sports Stadium (NSS) in Harare was banned for failing to meet CAF standards. Despite partial renovations — such as bucket seat installations — the NSS remains incomplete, with major issues still affecting the pitch and facilities.

However, the privately funded Chahwanda Stadium, spearheaded by Shepherd Chahwanda in partnership with Prophet Walter Magaya, is rapidly emerging as a game-changer. Located about 210 km from Harare, the 15,000-seater facility boasts impressive features — including 24 en-suited rooms, 52 entrances to ensure smooth crowd flow, 12 retail shops, a presidential suite, a fully equipped clinic, and space for a ZIFA office.

CAF stadium expert Muhammad Feizal Sidat has confirmed that the project is on track to achieve CAF Category 2 certification, allowing it to host CAF Champions League preliminary rounds, Confederation Cup, and U-17/U-23 AFCON qualifiers.

The stadium will also serve as the new home for Hardrock FC, currently chasing promotion into the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.

After years of exile and frustration, Chahwanda Stadium could soon restore Zimbabwe’s right to host international football — marking a turning point in the nation’s sporting infrastructure.
